POVERTY RATE

STUDY

A 19-year analysis between the Detroit Area Agency on Aging (DAAA) and Wayne State University Medical School (from 1999-2017) determined that about one in five older adults in Metro Detroit live in poverty, more than double the state rate.

These older adults struggle with rising housing and health care bills, inadequate nutrition, lack of access to transportation, diminished savings, and job loss.

. --A 2011 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation survey indicated that, “… 85% of physicians felt unmet social needs – such as lack of access to nutritious food, reliable transportation, and adequate housing – are leading to a worsening of health.” If seniors have the resources for their basic needs, they will be healthier and age in place with dignity, neighborhoods will be more economically stable, and billions of dollars will ultimately be saved in health care expenditures.
